Hobart Conference 2012 - Notice and Draft Programme

Conservation Challenges, Solutions and Collaboration Opportunities in Uncontrolled Environments
Date: 09 -11 March 2012, Hobart, Australia

The ICOMOS International Polar Heritage Committee is holding its next meeting and an open conference in Hobart, Australia in March 2012. The meeting and conference is timed to coincide with a series of commemorative events in Hobart to mark the centenary of Roald Amundsen s return to Hobart after the attainment of the South Pole.

The meeting and conference will be held at the Tasmanian Museum & Art Gallery in Hobart, with the conference dinner in the spectacular setting of Peppermint Bay. A number of events celebrating Hobart s links with Antarctic heritage will also take place.

The focus of the conference will be to bring together interested parties to discuss the conservation challenges and share solutions in uncontrolled environments, as well as improving linkages and encouraging opportunities for collaborations particularly with the science community to benefit broader conservation practice. In addition it is proposed that the opportunity for dialogue with scientists will enable linkages to be explored between current polar research and the scientific investigations which underpinned so much early polar exploration.

The conference and workshops will be open to heritage specialists, scientists, researchers, educators and students as well as participants from government, local community and industry. The formal meeting of the IPHC will be open to IPHC members only.

Calls for Speakers/Workshop Facilitators

The conference organisers are seeking abstracts relating to the conference theme and workshop topic(s). The number of speakers and the duration will be limited to allow sufficient time to workshop the relevant topic. Please send an abstract of no more than 250 words on either topic to the conference organisers, Nigel Watson and Julian Bickersteth. Organisers are also seeking expressions of interest for those willing to act as facilitators in the smaller workshop sessions.

Attendance
2012 will be a busy year for Hobart with a number of Antarctic centenary events taking place and the International Antarctic Treaty meeting occurring in June. For planning purposes therefore we would be grateful for an idea of those wishing to attend as soon as possible. (Note this is not binding).
