Criteria for membership

It is intended that membership of the IPHC will be open so that it is available to wide cross section of people working in the field of polar heritage protection.

Membership criteria: 

(a)   Expert membership

(i)   an Expert member will be a person with an active professional involvement and/or relevant practical experience in the protection and conservation of heritage sites in Arctic and/or Antarctic regions, who is interested in the work of the IPHC and be able to assist the IPHC to achieve any of its objectives;

(ii)   an Expert member will be a member of ICOMOS and will be recommended for appointment by the Executive of the IPHC.  Such appointments will be confirmed if ratified by a majority of existing Expert members attending an IPHC meeting or between meetings by a majority of existing Expert members responding positively to email or postal communication on the matter.

(b)    Associate membership

(i)   an Associate member will be a person with relevant skills and expertise who is recommended to the Executive of the IPHC by an Expert member as being a person interested in the work of the IPHC and able to assist the IPHC to achieve any of its objectives;

(ii)   an Associate member need not be a member of ICOMOS.  Once accepted by the Executive of the IPHC the appointment will be confirmed if ratified by a majority of existing Expert members attending an IPHC meeting or between meetings by a majority of existing Expert members responding positively to email or postal communication on the matter.

All memberships will be reviewed at each meeting of the IPHC that is held at time of the ICOMOS General Assembly.

Membership may be terminated immediately for failure to adhere to the ICOMOS statement of Ethical Commitment (immediate termination) or for failure to participate in IPHC activities during the previous triennium when called upon to do so.

Changes in membership status shall be ratified by a majority of existing Expert members attending that meeting.
