The Nordic Council of Ministers (Denmark including the Faroe Islands and Greenland, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden) adopted in 1999 an Action plan for nature and cultural heritage environment protection in the Nordic Arctic: Greenland, Iceland and Svalbard (Norway).
This action plan initiated a number of cooperation projects of which the following are particularly related to cultural heritage management and protection in these areas:
Documentation and monitoring of human impact on sites.
Protection of habitats, geological occurrences and cultural heritage sites.
Exchange of experience within arctic cultural heritage management.
Management guidelines for marine-archaeological monuments and sites.
Management guidelines for cultural heritage environments.
This last-named project was led by IPHC President Susan Barr with the secretariat sited in Norway at the offices of the Directorate for Cultural Heritage and was completed in 2004.
